I will be going to Amsterdam again in November and will attempt to find out more about the smoking ban specifically at Melkweg and try to report back with what I find. This unless someone else who's been recently can relay their experience. I haven't been to Amsterdam since JITD 08. I am aware that July 1, 2008 Amsterdam joined the Europen Union in prohibiting smoking inside public buildings like clubs, pubs, restaurants and venues. I've heard the ban is on tobacco which creates a bit of a loop hole for coffee shops. The dutch typically smoke their tobacco mixed with pot, so you can see the fine line shops have to walk. I was able to find this link which references that the Melkweg is indeed smoke free. http://store.melkweg.nl/ftp/HOUSERIDER% ... 4-2009.pdfI anticipate smoke of any kind will not be allowed in the Melkweg. I wonder if due to the new law they've taken measures to create a smoking areas inside or outside of the venue as most places in the States have also had to figure out ways to accomodate smokers.

Tobacco is definitely banned from all indoor public spaces, but you can still fire up pure ganja in the coffeshops, and we suspect, at the Melkweg. Found this review of an Alpha Blondy show there in Sept, after the tobacco ban took effect: No Smoking Restrictions

Official word from the Melkweg:Smoking of tobacco is not allowed indoors, although we can use the cafe as designated smoking area after the restaurant has closed, from 10.30 PM onwards. Anything not containing tobacco may be smoked inside.

Security has been tight at some of the shows for all smoking as they have trouble distinguishing if something is all pot or traditional pot/tobacco mix so AJ, you should sit down with the powers that be and get them to allow weed throughout as you will be taking the whole venue. This is done for the Cannabis Cup but virtually no other events. Smoking is restricted to the cafe after 10:30pm. In July when I was over, they definitely had signs in the Main Hall "No Marijuana Smoking"
